The HIGHWATERS project – Assessment of exposure scenarios and social vulnerability to sea level rise for the sustainable use of the territory (EXPL/GES-AMB/1246/2021)-, is funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology and coordinated by Centre for Geographical Studies of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (University of Lisbon).
It is an 18-month project that started on January 3, 2022 and includes a team composed of 10 researchers specialized in the study of risks in the territory. The main objective of the project is to develop and propose a roadmap for adapting to sea level rise in mainland Portugal, in a med- to long-term context, which enables the implementation of planning and land use strategies based on municipal land profiles risk elaborated from the dangerous areas due to sea level rise.
